I agree completely (sadly).
Reader was indeed neglected, but it was a good solution to the information overload that comes with RSS feeds (and the add-this-too compulsive tendency). It would have been fantastic if the addition of G+ integration did not destroy what good was available and the update also addressed a few of the product shortcomings. But the outcome is actually the opposite: less usability, cumbersome social features.
While there is remedy (in part) thanks to custom CSS styles and Greasemonkey (or similar solutions), one would expect much more from Google.
This sloppiness, lack of attention (never mind the details), general favour towards nuts&bolts instead of a perfect user experience reminds me of… Android.
